Telephone Computer Support Scams

Telephone Computer Support Scams

Calls purporting to be from “Microsoft”, “Windows” or any other “Computer Support Organisation”.

Remember Microsoft (Windows) will never call you to say “You have something wrong with your computer and we will fix it for you”.

The only people to make these types of call are criminals who will steal data from your computer and charge you an extortionate sum of money.

“Remember, Microsoft will never pro-actively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. Any communication we have with you must be initiated by you.”

See Microsoft’s Safety and Security advice.

If you receive an unsolicited call from someone who says they are from Microsoft or “Windows” or any “technical Support” organisation saying there is something wrong with your computer and we have to fix it for you,  my advice is:

  1. Never respond to ANY of these calls, however persuasive. Just put the ‘phone down.
  2. Never let ANYONE who has called you like this remotely take over control of your computer.
  3. Never give financial information or credit card details.
  4. Do not engage in conversation. Just put the ‘phone down.
  5. Do not be abusive to the caller. Just put the ‘phone down.
  6. Do not try to be “clever” with the caller. Just put the ‘phone down.
  7. Just put the phone down.

If you have been unfortunate enough to be caught out by one of these scams then do report it as fraud.

In the UK this is ActionFraud
