What do you mean by “Backup”

Over a period of time, you may have stored a lot of data on your computer, ‘phone or tablet. By data I mean music, movies, films, database files, business/private contacts, projects, notes, documents, spreadsheets and photographs etc. Some of which you may have paid for, some you may have created yourself, some of which may have taken a long time to build up such as a university thesis, a novel you are writing or a lifetime of photographs. You may use a computer to run your business.

Laptop and desktop computers have decreased in cost over the last few years, and the amount of storage inside them has increased. All of this data is currently stored in one place  –  on your computer. All of your eggs are in one basket, so to speak.

Having all of your data stored in only one place is dangerous.

The data is at risk. Computers can be lost, stolen or just irretrievably break down. Natural disaster (fire/flood), and accidental deletion, are also just some of the ways that you can lose the data you’ve spent so long creating and accumulating.

The only way to prepare for the unexpected is to have at least one ore more copies of your data in another location away from your computer. This is called a “backup”. If you lose the data on your computer, a backup will enable you to restore it onto another computer or device.

There are many different ways to backup your computers, and using multiple forms of backup will minimize the risk of ever losing your valuable files.
